From the app camera to document data

A project documented in AF Project materials: capture in the app starts a process that continues on the server.

The context

Users needed to capture documents and turn them into information the system could use. An initial web camera solution evolved to a native camera to provide more control over the capture experience.

The implemented workflow

Users photograph or select a document in the app. The file transfers to the server, where Node.js components and OCR tools extract data. Digital PDFs can be processed directly from their content.

Information becomes available to the application rather than remaining only in the document. The original materials describe integration between an app, website and backend.

A project that evolved in stages

The first implementation helped validate the workflow. Later phases added components better suited to emerging needs: a native camera, OCR processing and server-side PDF handling. The same base was extended to versions in other languages.

What to assess for a similar project

Document formats, image quality, fields to extract, permissions and the information destination are requirements to assess. OCR may make mistakes: validation and correction need design for the specific process. No accuracy percentages or time savings are claimed.

From this case to your project

If document capture is part of your work, describe how documents are collected now and where the data should go. We can assess reusable components and necessary integrations.

Frequently asked questions

Does OCR work with every document?

No: format, image quality and required data affect results. Feasibility needs testing with relevant samples.

Is this a simple website copy?

The case combines web system access with a native camera and server processing: it is an integration rather than just a web page loaded in an app.
